Description of Responsibilities:

GENERAL FUNCTION: This newly created position of Director of Major and Planned Gifts will be instrumental in establishing a new culture focusing on major and planned gifts. This new initiative will dramatically increase both the quality and size of the Y¿s prospect pool, and the Director of Major and Planned Gifts will play a key role. This person will carry a portfolio of approximately 150 qualified prospects and make a minimum of 175 face-to-face visits per year, including 30 solicitations. The portfolio will be divided between prospects related to the YMCA's two residential summer camps and planned giving prospects association-wide. The Director of Major and Planned Gifts will report directly to the Vice President of Development. The Director of Major and Planned Gifts is expected to be full and active member of the Development team & participating in strategy and planning, contributing their ideas and counsel. The Director of Major and Planned Gifts will work in a disciplined and focused way to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gifts. Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; makes relationship building the number one priority at all times. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree is required for this position. The candidate should have a track record of success in individual major gift fundraising (preferably in a human service setting) and experience in cultivating and soliciting prospects capable of gifts of $25,000 or more. The candidate must have skill in use of personal computers and related software applications. Sophisticated understanding of estate giving vehicles such as bequests, annuities, trusts, etc. Experience with the Raiser's Edge database is preferred. Individuals with related professional experiences will also be considered. Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising and able to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
(1) to initiate contacts with potential donors;
(2) to develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with key volunteers and senior YMCA staff;
(3) to move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure;
(4) to make solicitations when appropriate;
(5) to maintain stewardship contacts with donors. The candidate should have the ability to work in a close team environment. The candidate must have the able to perform tasks on own initiative, many of which have no prior precedent.

YMCA EXPECTATIONS: The member relations aspect of the position requires that relationship building be the number one priority at all times, attending to the needs and requests of health seekers, members, and all people within the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner.
