Networking Groups

Networking Groups are AFP Genesee Valley Chapter’s answer to providing opportunities for fundraisers to meet and discuss specific topics.

There are currently 3 networking groups in the chapter:

Experienced Grantwriters - a forum for experienced grantwriters to discuss issues and challenges related to grantwriting. The criteria for participation is being an experienced grantwriter, defined as someone who is actively involved in grantwriting at the time they join the group, who spends at least 50% of their time grantwriting, and who has been working in the grantwriting field for a minimum of one year.
The group meets once a month for a brown bag lunch at the United Way of Greater Rochester office. Meetings are generally on the second Wednesday of each month from noon to 1:15 pm. Participants select meeting topics and facilitators. Past topics have included sustainability, helping staff and clients become grant-ready, needs assessments, outcomes, letters of inquiry, metrics for evaluating grantwriters, and corporate funding.

Solo Shops - for fundraisers who are the only fundraising professional in their non-profit organization. The Group provides a forum for participants to network, discuss, and share information with other “solo shop” fundraisers about the unique concerns, questions, and opportunities that are presented when working as the only fundraiser in a non-profit organization.

In order to participate, one must be a fundraiser in a solo shop or interested in issues of special concern to solo shop fundraisers. The Group is open to AFPGVC members and non-members and there is no fee to participate. The Group meets approximately six times each year at dates and locations as determined by the Group’s members.

Young Professionals Networking Group-is for young professionals at all experience levels that support the fundraising efforts of a nonprofit, whether as part of their job description or as a volunteer fundraiser.

The Group provides a forum for participants to network, discuss, and share information with their peers and hold open conversations about the unique concerns and opportunities young professionals face in the field.  The Group may also invite special guests (of any age) to speak on a specific topic of interest or as an informal mentoring/networking opportunity.

In order to participate, one must be under 40 and interested in further developing their career in fundraising or the success of a nonprofit’s fundraising efforts.  The Group is open to AFPGVC members and non-members and there is no fee to participate.
