A Celebration of People A Note from Carolyn Slack, AFP Genesee Valley Chapter President This year marks AFP International's 50th anniversary and the Genesee Valley Chapter's 30th anniversary. Founded in 1960, AFP International produced two of its hallmarks within the first few years: a code of ethics and standards and an educational conference. These two items remain relevant today, a testament to the wisdom of the organization’s founders. Our Genesee Valley Chapter was one of the earlier chapters, founded in 1980. (Any readers charter members? If so, I’d love to hear from you!) We continue to be one of the leaders within AFP, through our participation in the governance of AFP International, the quantity of programs we provide, and for the strength of our local philanthropic community. In thinking about my membership in AFP and in talking to others about theirs, it is clear that belonging to a network of peers is one of the true values of membership. If you are not plugged in – please do so! Join a committee, volunteer at a registration table, take advantage of the buddy and diversity mentoring programs, or come a little early to one of the programs and strike up a conversation with someone you don’t know. This small investment in getting to know other members will enrich your life professionally and maybe even personally. So happy anniversary AFP. And thank you to all the people who make membership an asset worth having.
