Description of Responsibilities: The Director of Advancement is the key fundraiser in support of UR Medicine Home Care (URMHC), which since 1919 has been a regional leader in proving high quality, compassionate health care in the comfort and convenience of home. UR Medicine Home Care programs include Certified and Licensed Home Health Agencies covering 7 counties, Meals On Wheels, palliative and hospice care programs, pediatrics, home infusion, in-home technology, and other services to provide nursing, therapy, and personal care support. The Director will act as a strategic fundraising partner with the CEO of UR Medicine Home Care and is responsible for achieving fundraising objectives established by the URMC Advancement team and the CEO of UR Medicine Home Care.

The Director will develop and implement a strategic, comprehensive development program, soliciting individuals, organizations, foundations and corporations. Management of the Foundation encompasses professional fundraising techniques and approaches, including major gifts, annual fund, special events, grant writing, planned giving, and volunteer management. The Director will lead efforts to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gifts from the grateful patients and/or families treated by UR Medicine Home Care. The Director will focus on building a robust major gift and leadership annual giving (George Eastman Circle) pipeline with a high volume of visits, solicitations and gifts closed.

In addition, the Director will have a portfolio of approximately 100 major gift prospects to cultivate and solicit and will be a role model through his/her activity level with the primary objectives:

  • To further strengthen existing relationships between UR Medicine Home Care and its major donors.
  • To establish and strengthen relationships with newly identified major gift donor prospects for UR Medicine HomeCare.
  • To enhance overall regional community engagement with the goal of increasing the level of philanthropic investment in UR Medicine Home Care
  • Raise awareness of the superior level of care and expertise offered by UR Medicine Home Care

The Director will report to the Assistant Vice President for Clinical, Research, & Hospital Programs and will work closely with the CEO of UR Medicine Home Care and the URMHC executive team on all matters relating to fundraising priorities and Foundation management. He/she will serve as the Advancement liaison to the UR Medicine Home Care Board of Directors and as the primary staff support for the UR Medicine Home Care Foundation Board, including collaboration with the Board Chair and the URMHC CEO to set the agenda and prepare meeting presentations and materials.

The Director will also serve as the leader of the UR Medicine Home Care Foundation, and oversee and manage all aspects of the Foundation operations. The Director will work closely with UR Medicine Home Care Finance partners, leadership, and fund contacts to ensure the Foundation resources are maximized to benefit the mission of UR Medicine Home Care. The Director will supervise the Development Associate for UR Medicine Home Care, and as such will ensure the day to day management of Foundation operations and all related logistics are timely, efficient and of the highest quality.

The Director is expected to be a full and active member of the broader university Advancement team-- participating in strategy and planning, contributing their ideas and counsel particularly as they relate to programs within UR Medicine Home Care. The Director is expected to demonstrate continuous commitment to the University of Rochester Advancement Values.

Principal Accountabilities: Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive fundraising program for UR Medicine Home Care in close collaboration with URMC Advancement leadership and the CEO of Home Care

  • Develop and implement an effective fundraising program for UR Medicine Home Care that increases the number of significant gifts ($25,000+) from the URMHC prospect pool 
  • Effectively utilize URMHC/medical center leadership, faculty and key volunteers to cultivate, solicit and steward major gift prospects and donors; Work to identify new patient and family potential donors for UR Medicine Home Care through work with staff partners 
  • Work in conjunction with other University Advancement offices and colleagues to maximize philanthropic revenue for UR Medicine Home Care; This includes monitoring activity of other areas raising funds for URMHC, providing information as needed to colleagues and as well as maintaining frequent and open internal communication across all areas of Advancement 
  • Manage appropriate corporate and foundation relationships, including the submission or approximately 7-10 grants per year on behalf of UR Medicine Home Care 
  • Oversee the UR Medicine Home Care Foundation staff and related activities. This includes managing the Foundation Board, collaborating with the Home Care leadership group (i.e. finance), and working closely with the URMHC Board and leadership to identify priority funding opportunities to be supported with UR Medicine Home Care Foundation resources; It also includes management of the Development Associate to ensure he/she works to best support the needs of URMHC and the Foundation in an effective and professional manner. Oversee all special activities while working closely with the UR Medicine Constituent Engagement team and identified partners. Ensure event revenue goals are met and achieved, committee is empowered and active, and the events remain important community building engagement opportunities. Either individually or in cooperation with support staff, continuously update the prospect management database with information related to donor strategies, contacts and results.

Education: Bachelors required. Masters preferred.

Experience/Personal Qualifications: Required:

  • A minimum of 7 years of proven experience in major individual gift fundraising, preferably in higher education or healthcare, and in cultivating and soliciting prospects capable of gifts at the $50K+ level, relevant experience will be considered or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skills as a leader and manager, excellent communication skills and ability to function collaboratively
  • Major gift and management success working in a sophisticated and complex environment
  • Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising – able to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle: (1) to initiate contacts with potential donors; (2) to develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers and senior university administrators; (3) to move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward gift solicitation and closure; (4) to make gift solicitations when appropriate; (5) to maintain stewardship contacts with donors
