Genesee RiverWatch is a non-profit organization that works to improve the water quality of the Genesee River and its tributaries to create environmental, recreational, and economic assets for its communities. We also connect people to the river, encouraging them to explore, experience and celebrate the river. Our approach to this work is based on core values established over 50 years ago and include a commitment to inform and educate, to base our actions on science and data and to collaborate with others. Genesee RiverWatch was launched in 2014 with the support of its parent organization, the Center for Environmental Initiatives. The work of our Board of Directors, a small part-time staff, dedicated volunteers and generous donations have been critical to the success the organization has achieved to date. We are seeking a motivated and experienced Development Director to help us expand our fundraising efforts and build long-term, sustainable financial support.

Description:
The Development Director will be responsible for leading and managing the organization's fundraising initiatives, including individual, corporate, and foundation giving, special events, and major gift campaigns. This individual will work closely with the Executive Director, board members, and other staff to identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with donors and prospects. The Development Director will play a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s mission by helping to obtain needed financial resources to sustain itself over time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fundraising Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy that identifies sources of funding and successfully solicits those sources to provide the financial resources that meet or exceed annual budget requirements and lead to sustainability for the position and organization.
  • Donor Relations: Cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and other funding partners. Ensure excellent donor communications, engagement, and recognition.
  • Special Events & Campaigns: Collaborate with staff and the Board Development Committee on the management and planning of fundraising events and donor receptions to help achieve the organization’s financial goals.
  • Data Management & Reporting: Generate regular reports to track progress toward fundraising goals. Oversee donor database management, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Team Leadership: Coach members of the Board of Directors and staff in fundraising techniques so as to multiply the Development Director’s individual capacities and ensure a sustainable fundraising program. Help guide staff in social media and communication strategies to maximize donor engagement.
  • Board Engagement: Work closely with the Board of Directors to identify fundraising opportunities, provide reports on development activities, and involve board members in fundraising efforts. Provide recommendations of people with development skills for Board of Directors membership.

Education:
Required Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, Preferred Qualification: Master’s degree in relevant field.

Experience/Personal Qualifications:

  • Must live in or near, and be familiar with Rochester, NY area.
  • Experience in nonprofit fundraising in a small organization environment.
  • Fundraising Expertise: Proven track record of demonstrating fundraising success securing gifts and achieving an organization’s financial goals.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to engage and inspire a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Team-Oriented: Collaborative leader with the ability to work effectively with staff, board members, donors, and volunteers.
  • Tech-Savvy: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and software dedicated to use for nonprofit fundraising and donor management.
  • Other: Valid driver’s license and own vehicle; demonstrated ability to operate independently without close supervision; demonstrated adherence to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) code of ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Contacts and connections to potential donors in the Rochester area and throughout the Genesee River valley.
  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Knowledge of and connections to potential donors in the Greater Rochester area.
  • Certification as a fundraising executive (CFRE credential) or other fundraising certification.
  • Background in environmental issues and not for profits.
  • Experience with management of foundation relations, including knowledge of current funding trends.
  • Familiarity with Constant Contact software experience with fundraising software.
  • Familiarity with planned giving programs and corporate sponsorships
