![]() Name: Yukali Okkotsu (yu-KAH-lee oh-KAH-tsoo) How long have you been working in the fundraising profession? I have been working in fundraising for 2.5 years. I knew I wanted to be in the nonprofit sector since I was in college, but was unsure of what role would best fit me.
What do you love most about fundraising?
I love connecting with people and learning about what resonates with them about our mission and the work we do. Whether they have been a volunteer with us in the past, a former client, or a supporter, there is a community of people who believe in the work that my team carries out every day.
Why did you decide to join AFPGV?
I joined AFPGV because of the resources and opportunities it offers. It is a wonderful group of people who want to support each other and you can feel the warmth and passion that everyone has for creating a better community together.
What do you enjoy most about being an AFPGV member?
I have learned so much because of my membership—from educational events and connections that I have made through the networking events that AFPGV offers. I have a great network of fundraisers that I know I can reach out to for any advice. I am grateful for the support that AFPGV and its membership offers.
What example would you give of a strategy or practice you learned from a fellow
Showing the same level of gratitude for those who donate their time, talent, and treasure of any level. I have learned a lot about Community Centric Fundraising (CCF) since I began my membership with AFPGV. There are a lot of smalls ways to show supporters that they are appreciated, no matter the level. It not only makes them feel seen, but it strengthens their connection to your organization.
Why is Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (I.D.E.A.) important to you and for the work we do every day as fundraising professionals?
To show up for your community authentically, the work that you do should be based in I.D.E.A. The need is there, and it is important to be open to conversation with the community to learn what best fits that need and how best to fill the gap.
What is your advice to other AFPGV members?
Take advantage of the resources that are readily available to you through AFPGV and global, especially the mentor/mentee program. And never be afraid to ask questions.
