POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Development plans and implements the Friends and Foundation of the Rochester Public Library (FFRPL)’s comprehensive giving programs. Reporting to the Executive Director, working closely with the Board, FFRPL staff, and volunteers, the Director of Development is responsible for continuing to grow a strong culture of philanthropy at FFRPL. This position supervises the Annual Campaign & Database Manager.

Mission: The Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library (FFRPL) conducts essential fundraising and provides valued programs to enhance and promote the Rochester Public Library. FFRPL also manages restricted funds that provide financial and supplemental materials support to eligible libraries in Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming, Livingston, Orleans and Genesee counties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Fundraising

  • Establish and execute forward-thinking, goal-driven fundraising plans and programs that optimally grow the annual, major, and capital campaigns, including leadership level recurring gifts program, and planned giving (Mortimer F. Reynolds Society).
  • Work with the Executive Director, Board Development Committee, and Annual Campaign & Database Manager to evaluate each year’s giving programs, and develop goals and objectives for the following year.
  • Oversee all aspects of the fundraising program, including capital campaign, annual giving, grants, special events, and database management.
  • Partner with the Executive Director to develop a plan for the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors, and the stewardship of donors of annual, major, and planned gifts, with specialized plans for leadership prospects and donors.
  • Personally solicit annual campaign, leadership giving, major and planned giving donors after developing relationships through outreach and visits. In partnership with the Executive Director, manage the fundraising budget, forecasting needs and meeting budget targets.
  • Develop and maintain a highly collaborative relationship with the Executive Director, Board leadership, and individual board members, supporting them in their fundraising responsibilities and accompanying them on donor visits when appropriate.
  • Maintain a database of all contributors and provide development reports as required, with the assistance of the Annual Campaign & Database Manager.
  • Identify corporate and foundation funding opportunities and draft grant applications.
  • Manage the Annual Campaign & Database Manager.

Stewardship

  • Provide stewardship of donors through engagement and events, informational mailings, emails, meetings, and personal visits in collaboration with the other members of the FFRPL staff and Board.
  • Prepare and arrange production for solicitation materials (fundraising direct mailings, volunteer packets, verbal script materials).
  • Think strategically and formulate new ways to educate the Rochester community about philanthropy at FFRPL.
  • In partnership with the Marketing and Events Manager, coordinate volunteers to help with fundraising events and initiatives.
  • Support the Executive Director and Advancement Committee Chair for Advancement Committee meetings, reports to the Board, and coordinate volunteer fundraising and stewardship efforts.
  • Work closely with the Marketing and Events Manager who is responsible for targeted events, including fundraising events.
  • Work closely with the Marketing and Events Manager on design for print materials, video, and use of photos in print pieces, web, and social media.
  • Collaborate with all FFRPL staff to plan and produce communication materials that enhance the Foundation’s visibility and reputation.
  • Strengthen relationships with donors and continuously improve fundraising programming, working closely with the Executive Director, Marketing and Events Manager, and Annual Campaign & Database Manager.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.

Essential Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years or greater of progressive fundraising experience in the nonprofit sector, including management of fundraising campaigns.
  • Appreciation for and commitment to library advocacy, information literacy, and community resources.
  • A track record of success in a major gift or capital campaign environment is necessary, along with demonstrated ability to develop and implement 5-, 6-, and 7-figure gift strategies.
Essential Abilities:
  • Ability to develop and execute a multi-tiered fundraising strategy across multiple constituencies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work thoughtfully with all constituents while maintaining discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong data analysis and public speaking abilities.
  • Strategic thinker with a “can-do” style, able to convey FFRPL’s mission, strategic position, and vision, while taking the practical decisions needed to make programs run well.
  • Proficiency using database management software (Exceed Further) to coordinate campaign activities, as well as common office applications (Microsoft Office and Google suite)
  • Ability to offer new ideas and implement original or shared ideas to streamline day-to-day activities, initiatives, or events.
