Description of Responsibilities: 

  • Provides development and donor strategy for the President & CEO and other senior management and staff
  • Provides effective and inspiring leadership that produces dollars, volunteers and advocates
  • Provides leadership support and management of development efforts for the development committee(s) and board of directors
  • Evaluates the strategies currently used to solicit gifts and grants with the goal of increasing efficiency and effectiveness
  • Participates as an active member of the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) in partnership with CEO and Vice President colleagues
  • Represents PPCWNYs at community events, meetings, conferences and other relevant forums across the region
  • Shows respect to all internal and external customers for differences in backgrounds, lifestyles, viewpoints and needs in areas such as race, gender, ethnicity, creed, sexual orientation and others
  • In partnership with SLT, develops fundraising priorities to share with external constituents to secure funding. Provides expert technical assistance and guidance to all program staff interested in securing private funding from individuals, corporations and foundations
  • Develops and installs processes that promote clear communication and the healthy flow of information with staff and board and ensures that everyone in the organization understands his/her role in fund development
  • Position is responsible, in conjunction with the President & CEO, for representing PPCWNY with private donors, corporate and foundation funders, partner agencies and the public at large
  • Development Department Management
    • Develops and implements private fundraising goals to maximize financial support from financial institutions, corporations and foundations to support specific program needs. Formulates, defines, and interprets fundraising goals and donor-centered evaluative criteria to development committee and SLT. Provides regular status reports of projected and actual progress toward goals
    • Develops and implements a results-oriented comprehensive program that includes annual campaign, individual major gifts, planned giving, capital campaign, special events, stewardship and donor-relations, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and on-line giving
    • In coordination with the Public Affairs and Marketing team, oversees donor communications, donor-centered publications, special events, online giving, and donor recognition
    • Prepares overall budget for income from contributions and departmental expenses and establishes fundraising projections based on the needs of the programs supported and, when appropriate, the operating budget. Oversees revenue and budget expenditures for all development activities. In partnership with the SLT, designs, manages, and guides capital campaign efforts as appropriate. Oversees gift entry and acknowledgement; administration of donor data
    • Oversees all fundraising special events, with an emphasis on donor cultivation, acknowledgment, and net event income
    • Oversees research of private funding sources, technical grant writing and grants research in support of a broad range of programs, projects and services. Oversees grant, foundation, United Way/SEFA/CFC, and government applications, stewardship and reporting
    • Understands and deploys quality and process improvement techniques and utilizes data-driven decision-making
    • Supervises, and monitors work plans and evaluates development staff
    • Builds the development team necessary to manage the department’s activities as well as being prepared for projected organization growth, including department succession plans
    • Ensures that the responsibilities, authorities and accountabilities of all direct subordinates are well defined and understood
    • Provides ongoing coaching, training, and support as well as an atmosphere that encourages open, direct and respectful communication for department
  • Major Gift Program Management
    • Responsible for a portfolio of approximately 35 donors, and with active participation of the President/CEO and other senior management staff and board members/volunteers, cultivate and manage long term relationships with individuals, corporations and foundations for the purpose of securing gifts and grants to support the programs and mission of PPCWNY across the region
    • Coaches staff and board on their accountabilities for identifying and cultivating prospective donors within their networks and for stewarding existing donors, provides advice, coaching and support on the execution of appropriate potential donor engagement strategies.
  • Board and Volunteer Support
    • Participates in board meetings and senior leadership meetings
    • Engages, communicates, and partners with board members to establish goals, plans and activities which help the board provide support for the mission.
    • As appropriate, identifies, recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work in support of fundraising efforts.
