Volunteer Print

Increase the impact of your participation with AFPGV! According to AFP member surveys, locally and nationally, networking is the number one value of participation in AFP. What better way to get to know your colleagues than to volunteer?  Whether you have an hour a month or an hour a week to share, we have some fabulous opportunities for you to get involved and help promote philanthropy right here in our community.

AFPGV is a volunteer run organization and we have a number of exciting opportunities for you to get involved, including developing educational and networking programs, planning annual events like Conference and National Philanthropy Day, marketing and communications, and much more. See below for committee descriptions.

National Philanthropy Day (NPD) Committee
National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is a special day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy, and people active in the philanthropic community, have made to our lives, our communities and our world.  NPD has been a successful addition to the lineup of fundraising events for AFPGV.  The event raises more than $20,000 annually to support the activities of the AFPGV.

Education Committee
The Education Committee includes CFRE, fundamentals, deep dives, educational breakfast/luncheon programs, ethics, and four networking groups: capital campaigns, young professionals, small shops and senior advancement professionals. The goal is for members to work collaboratively and increase communications across the various sub-committees to enhance overall educational programming and provide a variety of networking opportunities for development professionals in the community.

CFRE: The CFRE/ACFRE Certification Committee provides ongoing promotion and preparatory opportunities for those interested in achieving and maintaining professional certification.  A CFRE refresher course is offered every two years. It will be offered in 2018.
Young Professionals: Open to AFP members and non-members, this group provides a forum for participants under age 40 to network, discuss, and share information with their peers and hold open conversations about the unique concerns and opportunities young professionals face in the field.  This group works to develop professional relationships and encourage younger professionals to engage in AFPGV programs, training opportunities, and other networking events.  The YP networking group also provides a comfortable space for young professionals considering a career in fundraising to gather information from peers.

Fundamentals:
Provides the AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course to those in our region who are interested in an overview of fundraising best practices and practical day-to-day information. Attendees benefit from both the course materials compiled by AFP and the real-world expertise of local experienced professionals who teach the modules.

Small Shops:
Provides an opportunity for individuals who are leading their organizations as a small shop to network and share information unique to small non-profit entities.  The group, open to members and non-members, works to share resources and offer input while encouraging participation in AFPGV programs, training opportunities, and other networking events.

Senior Advancement Professionals:
Provides an opportunity for seasoned fundraising professionals who support the efforts of non-profits, whether as part of their job description or in a volunteer capacity, to share unique concerns with peers with significant experience in the philanthropic community and/or development profession. Participants self-identify themselves, have 15-20 + years’ experience in the fundraising profession and/or are transitioning into the profession from a different field.

Conference Committee
To provide a meaningful program of intensive learning for AFP members and guests. Members will assist in facilitating the delivery of respective tasks and provide status of activities to the Chair and Co-Chair for tracking progress.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee of the Board of Directors provides focus and guidance regarding the membership of the AFP Genesee Valley Chapter (AFPGV). As a volunteer-based organization representing more than 200 fundraising professionals in the Greater Rochester region, our mission is to advocate for philanthropy and to promote ethical and successful non-profit development by addressing the needs of diverse fundraising professionals in our region.
The chapter is affiliated with an international association, which works to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education, and certification programs. The Association strives to enhance philanthropy and volunteerism through a series of programs designed to benefit all those who lead, serve, and support non-profit institutions. Our members represent colleges, universities and secondary schools, hospitals and health care facilities, social service and cultural agencies, and local charities.

Marketing and Communications Committee
The Marketing and Communications Committee serves as a resource team to provide ideas and support when it comes to all aspects of AFPGV. With continuously advancing technology and new ways to communicate messages, we will provide ideas that are on the forefront of communications strategy. Each member of our team brings a little something different to the table. Each member has some unique responsibility, depending on interest and experience. Our committee finds ways to promote the chapter and national brand and provide proactive public relations, as well as crisis communication. Vice President of Marketing consults and fills in when chairs are not available.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access (I.D.E.A.) Committee
The IDEA committee will assist in creating a community of inclusion by seeking, embracing and engaging diverse individuals, groups and organizations with a broad representation of experiences, perspectives, thoughts and cultures within the fundraising profession.

The Scholarship Committee reviews applications for AFPGV’s professional development and conference scholarships. Scholarships include the Chamberlain Scholarship for the AFP International Conference, Jill Pranger Scholarship for CFRE Certification, Karen M. Gaffney Scholarship for AFP Membership, Meyers Scholarship for the AFPGV Regional Conference, and the Williams Diversity Scholarship for AFP Membership.
