Financial Literacy: What Every Fundraising Professional Needs to Know (2019)

For Executive Directors and Directors of Development to be effective in their diverse roles, it is essential that they have a strong understanding of non-profit finance. It is critical to building a robust and thorough development plan that meets the overarching needs of the organization, but also important in understanding the total health and viability of the business. In this session, we will review the cornerstone components of non-profit financial literacy to provide you an introduction to these key topics.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to understand:

  • Financial Planning and Cash Management
  • Financial Statements and Reporting
  • Requirements of local, state and federal governments
  • Role of the Board of Directors and Staff 

Amy Wolfe, CFRE, is the President and CEO of AgSafe, whose mission is to be the education leader for the food and farming industries in supporting their commitment to a healthy, safe and wholesome food supply. Her career has included tenure as a professional staff member in the California State Assembly, serving as an account executive for E&J Gallo Winery and as Vice President of the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation. 

Ms. Wolfe is also dedicated to her community and profession, serving on the Boards of Directors for the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Agricultural Awareness and Literacy Foundation, as well as being involved in the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California. Ms. Wolfe received her Master of Public Policy and Administration from California State University, Sacramento, her Bachelor of Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and is accredited as a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE).

Diversity in Giving: Moving from Awareness to Action (2018)

Understanding and dealing with diversity, inclusion and equity in today’s philanthropic environment can present both challenges and opportunities. Join two of AFP’s diversity champions, Alphonce J. Brown, Jr., and Janice Gow Pettey in the upcoming diversity webinar which will include a discussion of today’s expanded definition of diversity, the presentation of recent diversity data, examples of diverse philanthropy, and a conversation looking at changes in philanthropy in the United States through the lens of diversity. This session will explore ways nonprofits can move from awareness of diversity to action.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to understand:

  • Better understand the changing landscape of diversity today.
  • Get beyond unconscious bias to understand and leverage giving characteristics of various diverse populations.
  • Create the culture needed to improve fundraising outcomes within diverse communities.


Alphonce J. Brown, Jr is the principal consultant for Docere Consulting, Inc.—a company he founded in July 2003. The company’s mission is to teach its clients how to achieve sustainability using new technology and proven fundraising methods through the use of annual fund, capital campaigns, special events and major donor solicitation.
Alphonce has worked with large established nonprofits, as well as small grassroots organizations. He also has consulted with local, state and federal governmental agencies and international NGOs. He was the director of development, National Minority AIDS Council, Washington, DC; vice president, University Advancement of California State University, Dominguez Hills, Carson, CA; president & CEO of the Prairie View A&M University Foundation; assistant dean of External Relations at the College and Graduate School of Business, University of Texas at Austin—and has held senior positions at a number of other nonprofit organizations. He has considerable expertise in the areas of strategic planning, organizational assessments, board development, volunteer management and fund development. Brown is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, an Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), and an AFP Master Trainer. He is a past chair of AFP International.

Janice Gow Pettey, Ed.D. is a nonprofit consultant, author, and noted authority on diversity, ethics, and nonprofit governance. She has a doctorate degree in organization and learning from the University of San Francisco. Janice is chair emeritus of both AFP Ethics Committee and the AFP Research Council. During her nonprofit career she has served both as CEO and led the development efforts for various national and international organizations. Janice is the author of Cultivating Diversity in Fundraising and she is the editor of Nonprofit Fundraising Strategy: A Guide to Ethical Decision Making and Regulation for Nonprofit Organizations, both published by Wiley. She is an adjunct professor in the School of Education at the University of San Francisco. She also teaches for the Fund Raising School at the Lily Family School of Philanthropy, IUPUI.
